Bua Tong Waterfall – Chiang Mai’s Famous Sticky Waterfall
Hidden deep in the lush forests north of Chiang Mai, Bua Tong Waterfall, also known as the “Sticky Waterfall,” is one of the most exciting natural wonders in northern Thailand. Unlike typical waterfalls, the limestone-rich surface here allows you to walk up the cascading falls without slipping—an experience that’s as thrilling as it is unique! The mineral deposits create a natural grip under your feet, making it feel like you’re climbing a waterfall staircase straight out of a dream. Each level offers a new sense of adventure, surrounded by jungle greenery and cool, refreshing water.

At the top of the trail, you’ll also discover Nam Phu Chet Si, a sacred natural spring often called the “Seven Colors Fountain.” Its vibrant hues and peaceful atmosphere offer a quiet moment of reflection before or after your climb. This unforgettable combination of fun, nature, and spiritual beauty makes Bua Tong one of Chiang Mai’s top adventure attractions—and a favorite for families, couples, and explorers of all ages. If you’re looking for something truly different, this is a must-do on your trip to Chiang Mai!

Tips

Know Before You Go

  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to enjoy the Sticky Waterfall is during the cooler morning hours or late afternoon, when the sun is less intense and the climb is more comfortable.

  • Plan Efficiently: Wat Tham Bua Tong (Bua Tong Cave) is located nearby, making it easy to visit both spots in a single trip.

  • Footwear Tips: For safety and ease while climbing, bring water shoes or non-slip sandals. Regular shoes and flip-flops don’t grip well on the limestone surface.

  • Bring Towels & Extra Clothes: Expect to get wet! Be sure to pack a towel and a change of clothes for after your waterfall adventure.
